ICT-enabled Bee Foraging Sites and Beekeeper Routes Optimization for Efficient Honey Production

Overview

The BEE-OPTECH4Honey aims to enhance honey production quality in Malta and Sicily by optimizing honeybee foraging sites and beehive transhumance routes using ICT and a GIS-based model. The project focuses on utilizing real-world data to identify ideal locations for nectar sites and optimal migratory routes, thus increasing the efficiency, productivity, and sustainability of beekeeping.

Main Activities:

  • Monofloral Honey Characterization: Comprehensive analysis of monofloral honey from selected regions. Testing honey samples and conducting melissopalynological analyses to determine floral origins. Aim for Protected Geographical Indication labels. Understanding diversity, quality, and environmental influences on honey production.
  • GIS-based Image Processing for Beekeeping Lands: Utilizing advanced image processing, including satellite and drone imagery. Identifying lands suitable for beekeeping. Integrating deep learning and machine learning methods for efficient and cost effective honey production while maintaining beekeeping ecosystem health.
  • Optimization Model for Beekeeping Operations: Developing a model to assign beekeepers to optimal nectar sites. Establishing efficient migratory routes. Addressing challenges such as hive overpopulation and complexities of migratory beekeeping. Aiming to maximize food production and reduce operational costs.
  • Integrated Information System Development: Implementing a system that combines digital technologies, optimization models, and GIS-based image processing for improved accessibility to apiculture data. Enhancing efficiency and profitability in the industry, addressing challenges like climate change and urbanization. Developed collaboratively by researchers and stakeholders in Malta and Türkiye, the system is versatile and deployable in real-world scenarios.
